The British Pharmacopoeia (BP) has explained the relationship between the BP and the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and the UK’s contribution to shaping European quality standards. It notes that the Ph. Eur. is not a European Union publication: it is published by the EDQM of the Council of Europe and is legally binding in 39 countries, including the United Kingdom. The BP brings together both Ph. Eur. texts and national monographs: European standards are identified by a special symbol (the “chaplet of stars”), while national monographs may contain direct references to Ph. Eur. requirements. For example, in the BP 2027 Melatonin Oral Solution monograph the quality requirements are based both on the BP general provisions for liquid dosage forms and on the Ph. Eur. monograph. Both pharmacopoeias have equal legal status in the UK.
