The International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) has issued a joint statement calling for a reduction in the use of animals throughout the entire lifecycle of medicines.
The International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) has issued a joint statement calling on manufacturers and national control laboratories to reduce the use of animals throughout the entire lifecycle of medicines. The long-term goal is to stop using animals altogether in general toxicity, reproductive toxicity and carcinogenicity studies and in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic studies. The statement was prepared by representatives of the EMA, the MHRA, Swissmedic and Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). At the same time, ICMRA stresses that the transition to alternative methods must be scientifically justified and comply with strict regulatory requirements. To encourage such methods, the coalition proposed expediting scientific advice on their validation and waiving the fees for it.
