Uzbekistan takes part in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias in Brazil

On 15–17 June in Brasília, Uzbekistan presented its national pharmacopoeia and harmonization work at the 16th IMWP; the British Pharmacopoeia extended an observer invitation.

A delegation of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Republic of Uzbekistan took part in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (16th IMWP), held on 15–17 June 2026 in Brasília, Federative Republic of Brazil. Organized by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia (Farmacopeia Brasileira) and the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the meeting coincided with the celebrations marking the centenary of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia.

The State Pharmacopoeia of Uzbekistan and its pharmacopoeial authority are a member of the WHO International Pharmacopoeia and are listed in the WHO Index of World Pharmacopoeias and Pharmacopoeial Authorities. At the official invitation of the head of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, Ms Thaís Corrêa Rocha, the country was represented by X.K. Djalilov — Head of the State Pharmacopoeia Development Department, editor-in-chief, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Professor — together with A.O. Zaynidinov, Deputy Head of the Department.

Held in a hybrid format (online and in person) across three working sessions, the meeting brought together representatives of the pharmacopoeias of Brazil, Britain, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, China, Vietnam, the USA and Uzbekistan, along with experts from the WHO Secretariat, ICH, EDQM, the Eurasian Economic Commission and other international organizations. The Uzbek delegation presented to international experts its ongoing work on developing the national State Pharmacopoeia, advancing international harmonization, preparing the second edition, and preparing for membership of the Pharmacopoeial Discussion Group (PDG).

The agenda gave particular attention to introducing alternative methods for endotoxin detection and to the international harmonization of general pharmacopoeial methods on the basis of ICH guidelines. The third day was devoted to the centenary of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, at which its 8th edition was officially presented — featuring 19 new monographs, 122 revised monographs and more than 200 updated topics.

Key outcomes

  • Representatives of the British Pharmacopoeia invited the Uzbek delegation to attend its commission meetings as observers;
  • the Mexican Pharmacopoeia expressed its readiness to provide free access to its pharmacopoeia;
  • the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia provided the Uzbek delegation with four current official editions in electronic form for free use;
  • harmonization mechanisms were studied through the IMWP Aspirations document, the work of the PDG and the ICH Q4B annexes, offering valuable practical experience for Uzbekistan's preparations for PDG membership;
  • leading pharmacopoeias' approaches to replacing animal-based methods in endotoxin and pyrogen testing with modern alternatives were examined.

Participation in the meeting strengthened the international standing of Uzbekistan's State Pharmacopoeia, expanded cooperation with leading pharmacopoeias, and contributed to refining the second edition in line with global standards.
